Franchitti hoping Indy turns corner on slow start

Včera v 3:48
At least that's been the case since he returned from NASCAR in 2009.But the combination of Honda's new engine, Roger Penske's dominance and some bad luck has Franchitti looking like anything but a champ in 2012. He's 12th in the standings, trailing leader Will Power by 100 points after four races, and he will need a drastic turnaround just to get back in the title hunt.

The good news is Franchitti will be spending the next 11 days working at his favorite track, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with a more confident outlook. In Brazil, I think we really turned the corner," the three-time defending points champ said during this week's practice. "We were 1/100th of a second off the pole, we definitely felt good with the race performance in Brazil and how the car drove. But all that has no bearing on what happens in Indy."

Titles usually do.Five of the last seven Indy winners went on to win the season championship and since 2004 all but one IndyCar champ was also in the top 10 at Indy. Franchitti is the exception to both rules, finishing 12th last season at the 500 and seventh in 2009 before capturing the points title each time. And fortunately for Target Chip Ganassi Racing, few drivers know how to get around the Brickyard better than Franchitti.

He's had a front-row spot in three of his last four Indy starts, and from 2005 until last year, Franchitti hadn't finished worse than seventh on the 2.5-mile oval. There is plenty riding on this weekend's qualifying and the May 27 race, too.A win would make the Scotsman only the second three-time Indy winner from outside the U.S., joining Brazil's Helio Castroneves. A win also would put Franchitti in a tie with Paul Tracy and Sebastien Bourdais for No. 7 on IndyCar's career victory list with 31, the most of any active drivers, and, of course it would give his championship hopes a real boost, too.

The joy of birthing will no more be hindered by birth pangs

Úterý v 4:06
The joy of birthing will no more be hindered by birth pangs. The Institute of Maternal and Child Health at the Kozhikode Medical College will soon introduce painless delivery facility in its maternity division.

The hospital has already started trial run of the labour analgesia at a specially arranged room in its labour ward. The formal announcement of the facility, considered to be first of its kind in the government hospitals in the state, is expected to be made soon.IMCH will spend Rs 25 lakh to set up the facility. Currently it has the facility to conduct painless childbirths on two women at a time.During a normal childbirth, labour pain for women lasts from four hours to eight hours Dr N Uamadevi, head of the department of Gynecology, Kozhikode Government Medical College, said painless delivery is advised for women who come with natural labour pain We have successfully performed painless deliveries on six women so far she said.

A sum of Rs 300 will be charged from Above Poverty Line patients who wish to avail the facility and it will be free for women from Below Poverty Line At present the IMCH takes care of 50-60 childbirths a day. Out of the 1,600 infant births in a month, 30-35 are done through C-section.Dr K T Ramdas, professor and head of the department of anesthesiology, said epidural space in the back is identified in the first stage. A combination of local anaesthesia bupivacaine with opioid like Sentenyal is given to the epidural space to block pain on the lower part of the body of a pregnant woman who has a well-established pain.

The woman in labour will remain conscious and will have the strength to push the baby out. There will be numbness at the pelvic region due to which women won't be aware of the pain said Ramdas. He said the method has more advantages compared to side effects. "On the flip side some say that there women who have opted for painless childbirths suffer from back pain. But then it happens even in cases of normal delivery,Former DPD chief robbed while mowing his lawn

Former DPD chief robbed while mowing his lawn

Stanley Knox, who was chief of the Detroit Police from 1991-1994, was mowing his grass Tuesday afternoon when he fell victim to an armed robbery. The two suspects are still at large. The criminal episode went down in broad daylight, about 3:05 PM, on the front lawn of Knox's home in the 18000 block of Marlowe. As Knox cut his grass two suspects approached and asked directions to Curtis St. After Knox answered, the two men got down to business.

They approached Knox, at least one with a gun drawn.Knox told Fox-2 that he wasn't afraid, but did wonder whether he was going to get shot. The former chief was not armed, but gamely fought his assailants. In the process he fell over his lawnmower. With Knox on the ground, the thieves removed a gold necklace and bracelet from him. Then they took off running between houses.According to DPD spokeswoman Sgt Eren Stephens, Knox was not hurt.

About a dozen officers responded to the scene. One noticed that the medallion from the necklace had fallen off and was lying in the driveway. The police took it as evidence, as it might contain a suspect's fingerprints. At least the ex-chief will get that back.

It is a chief's medallion, and thus of great sentimental value. The suspects are described as black males, both about 6' tall and 175 lbs, and between 19-20 years old.

Lawn Mower Trade-In Program Returns

8. května 2012 v 3:53
Lawn mower swap season has returned to Southern California.Residents who sign up for the South Coast Air Quality Management District's "Mow Down Air Pollution" program can trade in their working gas-powered machines for cordless electric ones.

Since 2003, more than 43,000 gas mowers have been retired by the and sent to junkyards, the agency said in announcing its 10th annual exchange program. This summer, the AQMD is offering six battery-powered electric mowers at subsidized prices ranging from for a small model to $280 for one with an extra battery and fast charger.A 5-year-old girl was flown to a Baltimore hospital Monday after a lawn mower accident in Forest Hill.

Around 6:22 p.m. a man was mowing in the 800 block of Kensington Farm Court in Forest Hill, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association. The man put the riding mower in reverse and accidentally backed over his 5-year-old daughter, amputating both of her feet, according to Gardiner.A medevac helicopter responded to the area to transport the girl for treatment, according to Gardiner.A teenage boy riding his bike was struck by a mower blade from a tractor that was being hauled by a passing truck Monday afternoon, police said.

Police responded to the accident along the 7000 block of Wertzville Road, just after 3 p.m.Marlin R. Miller of Carlisle was driving a truck and flatbed trailer that had an old tractor with a side sickle attachment, police said. The sickle broke and was protruding from the right side of the trailer. The teen riding his bicycle was struck by the sickle bar of the tractor, and was thrown onto the road, police said.

The teen was flown to the Milton S. Hershey Penn State Hershey Medical, where he is undergoing surgery and is listed in critical condition, police said.Pub teams kicker jumps in with both feet

Such an approach would not qualify as a sign of disrespect. In fact, it would be quite the tribute, seeing as how Lynn is ambifootrous.Yes, you read that correctly. When Lynn, a 6-3, 210-pound senior at Northeast High, performs kicking and punting duties for Public vs. Non-Public in the 38th annual Philadelphia Eagles City All-Star Football Classic, set for May at the Linc, he will be using his right foot for the former and left for the latter.Don't all scratch your heads at once.

I still dont feel its strange, but everyone sure asks me about it Lynn noted Tuesday after completing his classes. He was standing near Northeast's baseball field and a guy kept whizzing past on a riding lawn mower. He added: By now I don't even think about it. If I try to punt with my right foot it's a mess Mower delay. "The ball goes off my shin. Flies everywhere. Looks like I can't even play soccer. Punting leftfooted. It's just natural. I can kick the ball leftfooted as far as I can with my right." Mower delay. "But I have to hit with my toe. It just feels so weird though. Like I'd be throwing lefthanded.

Lynn then mentioned that Northeast coach Chris Riley installed a play in which Lynn would run a few steps to his right and then punt with that foot, hoping to catch the opponent off-guard.The very first time, he found out that idea wasn't going to work Lynn said, laughing.Ball went about 25 yards. Lot different than 40.

Lynn is a three-sport athlete and his original fall endeavor, back in his youth, was soccer. He does nothing else in his life rightfooted or righthanded, but when he started to play goalie, it just seemed natural to grab the ball with his right hand and drop it down to his left foot for boom-it-outta-here purposes.Slimming World recruits members who have lost weight

Rachel Watson, Consultant who runs the Godmanchester Slimming World groups is taking over the Buckden Slimming World group on Thursday 10th May. Rachel joined Slimming World as a member in April 2003: "I'd struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. At my highest I went up to a dress size 22/24 and my health was deteriorating badly. I'd tried every which way to lose weight on my own, going to other slimming clubs, dieting at home but I'd never given a Slimming World group a try. It's a big thing to admit that you need help, but it was the best decision I've ever made, I'd wish I had done it sooner and I urge anyone who wants to lose weight and has failed in the past to give Slimming World a chance. You won't ever look back".

I was really nervous about joining a group all those years ago, I never will forget my first night and the nerves I had beforehand but there was no need to be nervous because everyone was just so friendly. It didn't take long before I felt part of the group and their friendship, support and motivation were so important to me - and still are in helping me today. By going to Slimming World you really do get the support from all your fellow members and the Consultant, to help you through those difficult weeks. Our group is a safe place to share, celebrate and support each other. I'm still a Slimming World member and always will be, I just love going to group, I also Food Optimised whilst pregnant with my two children and felt great during both my pregnancies".

"Slimming World recruits members who have lost weight to become Consultants because it's so important to have a real understanding of the emotional and psychological issues that people who struggle with their weight go through. It was the support of my group and consultant that helped me to think and work through my own deep-seated emotions - guilt and unhappiness about my weight. The great thing is that because I'm a member I know exactly how people are feeling especially on that first night. When they first walk into our group I make sure we put them at ease straight away and make them feel welcome because I've been in their shoes!

Slimming World's healthy eating plan is called Food Optimising, swapping high-fat convenience foods and ready meals for healthy, home-cooked meals packed with 'Free Foods'. Slimming World's 'Free Foods' are based on the science of satiety and energy density meaning they're naturally filling yet low in calories. 'Free Foods' include fruit and veg, fish, lean meat and poultry, pasta, rice, potatoes, eggs and fat free dairy, and members following Slimming World's plan can enjoy all these foods in unlimited amounts.

The situation was unusual but the directors believed they could re-open various stores

he Rathmines and Parnell Street stores, whose landlords are connected to the company, will trade rent free for a year to allow them regain their trading position. The re-opening of other stores is considered unlikely unless landlords make proposals which would justify that, the directors said.

In court, Rossa Fanning, for Peat Company Ltd, said, given the decision to seek appointment of an examiner, the company would not proceed tomorrow with seeking its winding up at a meeting of creditors. Instead, creditors would be advised a petition for examinership had been presented to the High Court.Asked by the judge what had prompted the decision to petition for examinership, counsel said, while the company did not intend to get involved in a "blame game", it was initially advised it had no reasonable prospect of survival. However, after announcing its closure, other accountants had advised it had such a prospect.

The situation was unusual but the directors believed they could re-open various stores, including the Parnell Street outlet next Saturday. The Tallaght store had re-opened earlier, he said.Mr Justice Charleton noted the company had secured court protection with the presentation of the petition, fixed the petition for hearing on May 3rd and made directions for its notification and advertisement. In the petition, the directors of the company said, while incorporated in 1963, the company had its origins in a family business dating back to 1934 when William and Brigid Peat set up a shop at Parnell Street to sell wet cell batteries, bicycles, furniture and prams. All six of their children had joined the business.Escaped by a whisker

The company's business grew year-on-year and was inherently always profitable, employing 90 people at its peak. To grow its business, it had decided to expand through opening new stores trading as Sony Centre stores, a single brand store show-casing the entire range offered by Sony. The company also opened five stores under the Peats brand between 2005 and 2011.The most obvious reason for its financial difficulties was the precipitous decline in its turnover since 2008 the directors said. Turnover peaked in the financial year ended March 2008 at million, three times the 1998 figure.

A dozy dormouse had a rude awakening when he was sucked into a ride-on mower which shredded his mossy bed.Thankfully the cute creature named Dodger was stirred rather than shaken by his close encounter with the mower's rotary blades and has now bedded down in a cage to finish his winter sleep. He will be returned to the wild in warmer weather.

Dodger became more endangered than most after retired soldier Gary Gilbert, 54, began tackling his overgrown lawn at his home in Winkleigh, Devon, in the spring sunshine.Later, as he cleared up the grass that had gathered on the mower framework, he saw what he thought was a piece of litter on the ground. When I had a closer look, I saw a little dormouse roll in a ball,' said Gary. There was a slight movement and he didn't look injured.I called my wife Fiona to look at him then I scooped him up in some grass cuttings, put him in a small flower pot and took it to my neighbour.

He must have been whisked through the blades and up the chute. Perhaps he survived because he was so still and very relaxed. He probably weighs less than a two pence piece. We've called him Dodger because he had a very lucky escape.Like Mr Gilbert, neighbour Maggie Watson runs eco-friendly holiday accommodation and she has already undergone special training that will allow her to handle dormice.Mother of two Maggie, 42, knew she had dormice in the grounds of her home after placing nest boxes in the trees and has even seen one of the shy creatures before.

When she saw it, she realised from its colour and size that it was a Hazel dormouse. After taking advice from an ecology expert, she decided it was too early to release the dormouse, who remains a lightweight after its winter hibernation. He is in my dining room in a cage with some chopped apple, sunflower seeds and some blossom,' she said. They are nocturnal animals so I wouldn't expect to see much movement. Maybe I will hear him rustling around in the evenings.'

The team created GMO while conducting research into the behavior of a hybrid nanomaterial engineered by Chen that consists of carbon nanotubes essentially, graphene rolled into a cylinder decorated with tin oxide nanoparticles. Chen uses his hybrid material to make high-performance, energy-efficient and inexpensive sensors.

To image the hybrid material as it was sensing, he and physics professor Marija Gajdardziska used a high-resolution transmission electron microscope But to explain what was happening, the pair needed to know which molecules were attaching to the nanotube surface, which were attaching to the tin oxide surface, and how they changed upon attachment. So the pair turned to physics professor Carol Hirschmugl, who recently pioneered a method of infrared imaging that not only offers high-definition images of samples, but also renders a chemical signature that identifies which atoms are interacting as sensing occurs.

Chen and Gajdardziska knew they would need to look at more attachment sites than are available on the surface of a carbon nanotube. So they "unrolled" the nanotube into a sheet of graphene to achieve a larger area.

That prompted them to search for ways to make graphene from its cousin, graphene oxide an insulator that can be scaled up inexpensively. GO consists of layers of graphene stacked on top of one another in an unaligned orientation. It is the subject of much research as scientists look for cheaper ways to replicate graphene's superior properties.Novi district making adjustments to finish school year strong

A familiar rite of spring began this past weekend as I mowed my yard for the first time this year. While it seemed a bit early, it was clearly time. I pulled out all the tools yard trimmer, blower and lawn mower and proceeded to get to work.

Each year as I begin the lawn mowing task, I think back to prior years. Then I strategize to identify a better way to attack the yard. Maybe if I started here and went this way I could get done more quickly. Or maybe I should start in the back and work my way to the front and it would not take as long. While all the strategizing makes me feel better, my job is to get the lawn mowed. I can tweak what I do, change the direction I go, or work back to front or front to back. I have learned, though, that regardless of my planning, it still takes me about an hour to get the job done.

But while I was mowing I thought about our schools. We are at that point when we can see the end of the school year. Spring break is over. There are no significant breaks between now and the end of year. The question is have we done all that we could to get the job done? Our job is to educate the students who attend our schools, and we take whoever shows up on that first day of the school year. Goal number one for our district is to ensure a year's growth in a year's time for every student.

As each school year begins we tweak our plans. We think about what we have done in the past and make what we think are appropriate adjustments.
